What is IOP? IOP is an intensive counseling program that is time limited and tailored to each individual to assist you in coping with life's stresses. IOP helps you with a support system in which to grow and to integrate new skills and insights to return to your highest level of functioning through:
- Medical management
- Medication education
- Crisis counseling/interventions
- Psychoeducational groups
- Literature to increase awareness of community resources
- Coping skills activities
- Exercises to identify an understanding of anger management

Who Can Benefit? Everyone needs help from time to time dealing with personal issues. Most people don't hesitate to see their medical doctor for physical problems, but many people who could benefit from proper counseling care NEVER seek or get the help they need. Perhaps it is denial of the problems, or that they never had the opportunity to be involved in a quality program and their disease reached a severe stage.
You may be a candidate for the behavioral program if you need help dealing with personal issues or are suffering from depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorders, marriage or work conflicts.
If you have the following symptoms, you may also be a candidate for the program:
- Major mood swings
- Drastic chances in appetite, sleep or behavior
- Headaches, diarrhea or ulcers resulting from stress
- Suggestions from loved ones that you seek help
- Conversations that revolve around your problem
The most common causes of avoiding treatment, or in seeking help, is often fear of the unknown, or the lack of knowledge of available resources. IOP emphasizes early intervention and treatment in order to prevent the necessity of inpatient admission.
How is IOP different from other outpatient services? The primary advantage of attending an IOP program is that you receive 3 to 4 1/2 hours of therapy daily, versus the traditional one hour a week office appointment. Treatment is provided to control or reduce symptoms so as to prevent a relapse or hospitalization.
How are services accessed? Individuals are referred to the program by a:
- Psychiatrist
- Psychologist
- Therapist/Social Worker
- Self-Referral
- Insurance Company
Every person that is referred is confidentially and individually evaluated in order to establish criteria for the program. If this person meets criteria for this level of care and does not have a psychiatrist, one will be assigned.
How long is the program? The length of the program is determined by the patient's progress. The average length of stay is 6-8 sessions.
Will my insurance cover this? IOP programs are extremely cost-effective and most insurance plans cover IOP. Most insurers recognize the need for outpatient counseling care in a less restrictive environment. The co-pay is the same as seeing a private counselor.
Treatment Modalities include:
- Crisis Intervention
- Group Therapy
- Family Counseling (as needed)
- Marital Counseling/Intervention (as needed)
- Relapse Prevention Group
- Medication Management/Education Group-
facilitated by Dr. R. Scott Findley, Medical Director

Electroconvulsive Therapy Electroconvulsive therapy is available at Orange Park Medical Center. You might be a candidate for ECT if you suffer from severe depressive symptoms, intractable psychosis, psychotic pregnant women, patients that due to medical conditions cannot take medications that may stabilize mood, and thoughts of suicide or homicide, and a general feeling of hopelessness. If you dont respond well to antidepressants or have severe mania or schizophrenia that does not respond well to drug treatments, electroconvulsive therapy is an effective way to treat behavioral issues.
